Research interest: Renal biopsy, genitourinary (prostate, bladder) pathology.
In the area of renal pathology, I am interested in clinicopathologic correlations, with areas I've investigated including cholesterol atheroembolic renal disease, cryoglobulinemia and hepatitis C, concurrent renal disorders in patients with diabetes mellitus, amyloidosis and renal involvement by lymphoproliferative disorders. In genitourinary pathology, I am interested in prostate and bladder cancer and non-neoplastic urothelial disorders.
I am involved in a research project with pharmacologists studying the effects of various drugs in relation to renal physiology and pathology in animal models (rats with obesity, spontaneous hypertension and diabetes). In prostate cancer, I am interested in chromosomal alterations in high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive carcinoma. In bladder cancer, I am interested in genotypic mutational profiling relative to grade and stage. I am involved with basic scientists studying the effects of various chemicals and ionizing radiation on rat urothelium, attempting to develop animal models of interstitial and radiation cystitis. We are trying to find drugs which can mitigate these effects.
