MINUTES OF THE RENAL PATHOLOGY SOCIETY BUSINESS MEETING

The Renal Pathology Society (RPS) held a business meeting on Monday evening, March 8, 2004 during the annual meeting of the USCAP at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver, Canada.

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Charles Jennette, RPS President.  Thirty-eight members were in attendance.

Dr. Jennette recapitulated the success of the first satellite renal meeting sponsored by the RPS.

He also indicated that Dr. Steve Bonsib is the new Councillor and that Dr. Rennke had resigned his position.  A new vote by the membership will be required.  Dr. Bonsib will serve a shortened two-year term before becoming President.

Finally, he announced that Dr. Agnes Fogo was nominated for a Council position in the ASN.

Dr. Herrera, Secretary-Treasurer, announced existing RPS funds and gave the Treasurer’s report.

Heads of committees made their reports.

Dr. Picken reported that the RPS currently has 274 members, 197 from North America, 15 from Canada, 3 from South America and 43 from Europe.  Dr. Picken suggested that a new category of membership for trainees with reduced annual dues should be created. Dr. Picken will prepare a proposal and the members will vote by mail.

Dr. Bonsib reiterated that the satellite meeting will be held in conjunction with the USCAP recapitulated the results of the poll conducted addressing when to hold the meeting, for how long, etc (see BOD minutes).  It has been proposed that every 3 years or so, the meeting should be outside of the U.S.  Next year, the meeting will be Sunday, 1-5 p.m.

The opportunity of ASN travel scholarships for Pathology residents was discussed.  One drawback is that there is currently a rule that no more than 2 of these scholarships/
institution are approved.  Therefore, Pathology residents interested in Nephropathology would be competing with residents interested in Nephrology.

The mechanism for granting grants using KUFA funds given to the RPS was also discussed.  A committee composed of 2 members from KUFA and 3 from the RPS (one being the RPS President) will be formed to evaluate proposals for funding.  More information regarding these grants will be forthcoming as decisions are made.  Dr. Olson proposed that a joint RPS/Society for Ultrastructural Pathology companion meeting should be organized in the near future.  The membership unanimously approved this proposal.
