YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD

Hitrenda Jethwa won the fall 1997 Young Investigator Award for work that was done in the laboratory of Dr. Charles Jennette. Members are encouraged to nominate young investigators for the 1998 awards - one at the USCAP Meeting and another at the ASN Meeting. MINUTES

The minutes from the Business Meeting at the November ASN meeting are enclosed. A number of important issues were raised including the appropriate controls for immunofluorescence microscopy, fellowship programs and the future of the specialty under the pressure of managed care.

PROPOSED CHANGES IN THE BYLAWS

The Board of Directors has recommended the several changes in the Bylaws due to the new structure of the ASN fall meeting. Several places (detailed on the ballot) mention the NKF in regard to the timing of RPS Scientific Sessions and various meetings. NKF will be changed to ASN in the bylaws to reflect the changed situation. In accordance with the Bylaws, the proposed changes are on the ballot for your consideration.

ELECTION OF NEW OFFICERS

As noted in the minutes, nominations for new officers are Dr. Seymour Rosen for Vice President (President Elect), and Dr. Jan Bruijn and Dr. Agnes Fogo for the one open Councillor seat. In accordance with the Bylaws, election will be by vote of regular members. A ballot is enclosed in this mailing. Please return it by January 9, 1998. You may FAX your ballot to (919) 966-4542 or mail it.

 

DUES FOR 1998

This mailing also contains your Statement of Dues for 1998. Dues are $50 (US) again this year. You may pay with Visa, MasterCard or check. Please verify that the information we have on file is correct and return the form with your payment.

If you choose to pay by Visa or MasterCard you can FAX the form to our office. You will receive a receipt in the mail.

 

AT THE USCAP MEETING, MARCH 1998

Renal Pathology Society functions at the USCAP Meeting this March will include the Companion Meeting, a business Meeting , a reception, and a dinner for members and guests on Sunday, March 1. The Renal Pathology Specialty Conference, moderated by Charles Alpers will be Monday evening, March 2.

COMPANION MEETING

The Renal Pathology Companion Meeting at the USCAP meeting will be held on March 1 from 8:30 AM until noon. Theis year the meeting will be a joint presentation of the RPS and the Binford-Dammin Society "Viruses and the Kidney" moderated by Drs Cynthia Nast and Sylvana Tuur-Saunders. Presentations include Epstein-Barr Virus, Dr. Tibor Nadasdy; Hemorrhagic Diseases, Dr. Sherif Zaki; CMV and BK Virus, Dr. Roger Smith; and Adenovirus Immunoregulatory Genes and their Role in Islet-cell Transplantation, Autoimmunity and Viral Vector Design, Dr. Marshall Horowitz.

 

BUSINESS MEETING AND RECEPTION

The Business Meeting will be held Sunday, March 2 from 6 to 7 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel with a reception for members and guests following from 7 to 8.

 

DINNER AND CHURG AWARD

A RPS dinner for members and guests is scheduled for Sunday evening, March 2 at 8:00, also at the Sheraton. Full details will be mailed in January, but mark your calendar now.

At the dinner, the second annual Jacob Churg Award will be given to an individual who has made major contributions to the field of Nephropathology. The monetary component of the Award is being supported by Barnert Hospital. The recipient will be selected by the Nominating and Awards Committee from nominations submitted to the Committee by RPS members.

Those wishing to nominate someone for the Jacob Churg Award should send a nominating letter and the nominee’s C.V. by January 10, 1998 to the Chair of the Nominations and Awards Committee, Dr. Arthur Cohen, Department of Pathology, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, 8700 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90048. It is appropriate for an individual to be nominated by more than one member.
