News from the USCAP Meeting in Boston, March 1998

Five members were welcomed in to the Society on the recommendation the Membership Committee. They are Glen S. Markowitz, M.D., Laura Barisoni, M.D., Roberto F. Nicosia, M.D., Alexis A. Harris, M.D., and William J. Cook, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Robert Colvin was presented the Second Jacob Churg Award at the RPS dinner in Boston. Congratulations and thanks for his outstanding contributions to the field of renal pathology are extended to him.

Events at the ASN Meeting in Philadelphia, Sunday, October 25, 1998

RPS SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM

The Renal Pathology Society Symposium will be Sunday, October 25 from 7:20 AM - 8:45, Room 108AB Pennsylvania Convention Center. This year’s session "Advances in the Pathobiology of Acute Renal Failure" will be moderated by Helmut Rennke with presentations by Richard Zager, The Multifactorial Nature of Acute Renal Failure; Lessons Learnt from Rhabdomyolysis, Seymour Rosen, Models of Acute Tubular Necrosis: A Perspective, and Manjeri Venkatachalam, Cell Biology and Molecular Mechanisms of Tubular Injury.

RPS BUSINESS MEETING AND RECEPTION

The Business Meeting will be held Sunday, October 25 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the Concerto Room at the Doubletree Hotel. A reception for members and guests will follow in the Aria Room, 7:30 to 8:30pm.

RPS Co-sponsored ASN Sessions in Philadelphia

While RPS members individually continue to participate in many of the ASN scheduled educational sessions, this year we are pleased, as a society, to co-sponsor three ASN sessions.

The first is October 23-24, the ASN Postgraduate Education Course "Basic Renal Pathology: From Bedside to Bench" with Dr. Fogo chair and Drs. Bruijn, Cohen, Colvin, and Jennette.

At the second, Tuesday, October 27, 1:30 - 3:30pm, Dr. Cotran will co-moderate the Basic Science and Clinical Science Symposium "Crescentic Glomerulonephritis: Newly Explicated Mechanisms with Therapeutic Potential".

The third, a repeat of last year's Short Course, now the Clinical Nephrology Symposium, "Interpretation and Clinical Applications of the Renal Biopsy" will be Tuesday October 27, 4:00 - 6:00pm. Dr. Fogo will moderate with Drs. Alpers, Cohen, D'Agati, Jennette, and Rennke presenting and Dr. Stephen Korbet discussing. Prior to the session, RPS members will be available in the microscope room for guiding hands-on review of the cases for participants.
