- ISN-COMGAN has now funded two Centers of Excellence in Renal Pathology, one in Chile and one in Brazil, thanks to the efforts and input and encouragement from members of the RPS, the work of the ISN-COMGAN Renal Pathology subcommittee, and funded by ISN-COMGAN. Funding started January 1, 2006. A second year of funding will be considered based on satisfactory progress reports, due later this year. Depending on the results of this effort, we might consider asking for a second round of ISN-COMGAN support for additional centers.
- The Training Program committee is aware of 3 renal pathology fellowships in the USA that applied for and were approved by the ACGME; namely Johns Hopkins, University of Washington and Vanderbilt University.
- The membership is reminded of the recent survey of status of number of fellows trained, training program components, funding of training, and current jobs held by trainees. This survey was sent out to all RPS members, and a summary was presented last year to the RPS membership.
- Our stated goals for 2006 are:
- We will continue assessing the training programs to see how many available fellowships positions are filled, and by whom, and the career tracks of recent trainees.
- We will also continue to support any programs that wish to apply for ACGME certification, and update the membership on the experiences from the ACGME accredited programs.
- We also plan to continue to publicize the availability of travel grants from the ASN for pathology residents to attend the ASN.
- We will keep the membership updated on the recently funded ISN-COMGAN Renal Pathology Centers of Excellence support for additional travel.
- We will continue to work on identifying mechanisms to publicize our training programs both in the US and abroad.
- In addition, we will in response to a directive from Dr. Bruijn, RPS president, also investigate possible tools and methods of proficiency testing for renal pathology.
