About the speaker

 Dr. Kopp graduated from Harvard College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He competed internship and residency in Internal Medicine, as well as nephrology fellowship, at the University of Washington. Since 1987, he has been at the National Institutes of Health, currently serving as Chief, Kidney Disease Section, NIDDK.  He leads a translational research group, studying mechanisms of and therapies for the syndrome of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, with a particular focus on the role of APOL1 genetic variants. He served for 25 years in the United States Public Health Service, with deployments to public health crises, and retired with the rank of Captain.
